Ah, the mystery question of this and the past century. Both are superb, and anyone can list their three reasons why they chose one over the other. I'll give you one for Canon (yes, I own three Canon DSLRs, while is a pure Nikoner in the film era). New Canon models are getting wild reviews for their noise suppression--the ability to use very high ISO speeds with little noise infecting your picture.
Definitely 6-2-1 if you're talking point and shoot versus DSLR. In that case, there are both style differences (design) and feature differences. This is a good time for comparison shopping -- take a list with you of all the features you thing are important and/or desirable, and well as some idea of what you will be doing mostly with the camera. Pick a camera shop with a good rep in your community, and one where you think you can tie up a sales person for at least a half hour.
Good luck. And, of course I'm wondering if that's your photo :-)
