Actually the Biltmore estate is privately owned house originally built as a summer home for the Vanderbilt family. It is still in the family however it now is shown as a tourist attraction instead of lived in because of the amount of money it cost to keep up the house and the taxes. There is a smaller hotel on the property called the Biltmore Inn but it is not part of the house.
