Are you kidding? Hate is such a natural human emotion that how could a kid NOT know hate? Babies don't cry just because they're hungry, you know. Emotion emerges in human young from as young an age as 6 to 7 months. When you find a kid clubbing another kid because s/he has taken a toy from them, that's anger. And if we can feel fury that early, then we sure as hell can feel hatred. Ms. Marie, is there another kid in the family?

Children use extremes without understanding the full ramifications of them. Even my almost 8 year old and very mature grandson still thinks his mom "hates" him when she expresses anger AND, yes, EVEN though she expresses the anger in a healthy non-abusive constructive way. Don't forget that they say that kids can't comprehend the concept of death until girls age 8 and boys age 10, so abstract concepts like "hate" and even "love" are far from graspable at 5. :)
