until 1917, there was Russian Empire under the rule of Emperor Nicolai II. He and his family were killed during the Soviet revolution.

Vlanimir Lenin
Joseph Stalin
Nikita Hruschev
Leonid Brezhnev
Juriy Andropov;
they all ruled for many years till they died.

The last general secretary was Michael Gorbachev,
who then became the first and the last President of Soviet Union (in 1990)

After the collapse of Soviet Union (1991), Russia as an independent state emerged.
