One of the keys to success with landscape design software is finding a plan and program that is not too difficult to use or understand. It’s frustrating to try using the most complex or most expensive software and get no results, or results that aren’t satisfactory. People who haven’t used landscape software might want to avoid buying too much software as well, since some programs come as a package with interior and home design plans.
In recent years more landscape design software has become available at reasonable prices, especially with the many Web sites that can be an entrance to wonderful design plans. In fact, basic design software with limited details might even be free in some places. A good place to start is with some basic visualization software that will allow you to get a virtual look at a garden, a backyard design or other area. While this doesn’t offer live or real views of outdoor scenes, it does allow the user to make changes and move virtual items around.
Some landscape design software is merely a sketching program that uses lines and colors to indicate items in their proper place. Any of these are limited but might be perfect for the first-time designer of a personal space around the home.
Another free software program uses a view that is more like a floor plan, with the user moving plants, benches and other items around in an almost-unlimited number of combinations. Like the virtual scenes mentioned above, this isn’t a real-time view of the outdoor scene but it can help the do-it-yourself person make the best use of available space.
The next step in landscape design allows the homeowner to incorporate photos of the actual site into design plans. There are some limits to this program as well, even though it does make the design process more “real” since it uses real lawn photos.
All of these, of course, require some computer knowledge and becoming comfortable with using the software. The good news is that the most basic software doesn’t require the latest technology or a lot of computer knowledge to operate. It may take the beginning designer a few tries to get to a level of comfort so creativity and dreams can come out. Some people might want to go back to the basics of design and draw their own plans using pencil, pen and paper. This can be fun and challenging at the same time. It can also be a great preliminary step, before getting the design onto the computer with some easy-to-use landscape design software.
Closer to the top of the design software list are three-dimensional programs that even let the property owner see the yard or other space “grow” over the years. This feature makes the original plan much more likely to be successful over time. Some of the best programs include more sophisticated photo-editing software in addition to three-dimension capabilities. When comparing programs and shopping for the right price, consider eliminating additional features that may not be needed. Buy all software you need but no more.
