I have written some music using lyrics that describe characters from a book. Can I copyright both music and lyrics?

I have written some Children's music (song, accompanment & lyrics) to compliment the stories by a famous children's author.  I will apply for a copyright to protect my work.  Can I include the lyrics as part of the material to be copyrighted?

Clarifications added on 7/15/2009 :
I will need permission from the book author to publish my music but can I include the lyrics in the copyright or should I have the music only copyrighted?
