You need to be sure that what you think is shyness is not lack of confidence. Most of the times we fail to approach people because we don't feel confident about ourselves. I'm sure you are a good human being. Talk to people, initiate your conversation with a pleasant smile. Everyone likes it. There's hardly a person who doesn't want to make new friends. Just remember, do not be pain in the butt. :)
