Have you ever thought of a world with wireless electricity? Yes. It is going to be possible as the team at Massachusetts Institute of Technology has invented a new feature which is named as WiTricity, a short form of wireless electricity. The WiTricity provides electrical energy to the remote objects without the need of cords, cables or wires. It is based on the strong bonding electromagnetic resonant objects which transfer energy between them wirelessly. This technology can potentially be used in a large variety of applications including consumers, industrial, medical and military services. The main aim of this WiTricity technology is to reduce our dependence on the batteries. The team of Massachusetts Institute of Technology has demonstrated the wireless power transfer, which powers the laptops, cell phones etc without cords.
If you imagine the future generation using the WiTricity technology to power up cell phones, house hold robots, mp3 players, lap tops and other electronic appliances without the need of plugging in or the use of battery, it may appear like a dream come true project.
How did this idea occur to the MIT team? One of the team members of MIT has the habit of forgetting to charge his mobile phone. It struck him one day that it would be better if the mobile phone is able to take care of its own charging. So he started working on this project along with the other team members to convert his idea into reality.
Procedures of transmitting power wirelessly: The scientists have known so many methods of transmitting electricity wirelessly such as radio waves, lasers etc. But in these methods vast amount of power gets wasted as it goes unused due to the wide spread rays of radio waves. The laser may require an uninterrupted line of sight between the source of power and the device which receives the power. But it may not be practically possible all the time. But MIT team has come up with the best option of wireless power transmitting.
They chose the combination of resonant objects which tend to exchange the energy between them very efficiently. In any system of coupled resonators there often exists a strongly coupled regime of operation. In this process the energy transfer is very efficient without any wires or cords. The magnetic coupling is particularly suitable for our everyday applications because most common materials interact poorly with the magnetic field. So this procedure is considered as the safest one possible to transmit power wirelessly.
