AltaVista is the one known for its search engines results. It provides very large of websites related to your search. But the real problem with this SE is that it does not support videos. Thus it is common all across the world but cant be compared with Yahoo or Google.

Yahoo, as from its name it is clear that it is made by some very happy people, it ranks 2 in the worlds most popular and best search engines. Yahoo has got a lot of things for their users which includes images, videos etc. They also have email messenger (which makes them unique) when compared with others.
 
Yes the list of the top SE of the world is topped by Google. It is simple to use and provide most basic interface to the users. Images, videos, news, groups, books an email account and blog are all supported by Google, which makes it best search engine of the world.

While AOL, AltaVista, Yahoo and Google are on top, there are other less popular SE also available in the market. Though Google stands first with no one really pushing to compete it, SE market is still opens for new search engines.
