Valentine’s Day also known as Saint Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14 every year by many people throughout the world. The day holds special significance for the loved ones as the lovers express their love for each other in the form of giving gifts and by exchanging handmade gifts portraying their love for their loved ones. A few common gifts that the guy gives the girl are flowers and Valentine’s Day greeting cards and especially the roses are exchanged between them. The present day valentine day symbols include roses, heart shaped outline, doves and last but not the least is the figure of a winged cupid. This name comes from the early Christian martyr named “valentine”. Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated in many parts of the world.
According to report, the U.S. greeting card association state that on this day most number of valentine cards are sent throughout the world after Christmas. It’s the same association which also states that man spend, on average, as much money as women on this day. So this shows us how much Valentine’s Day helps in boosting up the world’s economy. Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many different ways throughout the world. Many countries in this world have different dates of celebrating Valentine’s Day. Feb 14 is celebrated as Valentine’s Day in India and Rome.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in a different way in UK where a character called ‘jack’ valentine knocks on the rear door of each house in the street and leaving sweets and gifts for children. In Wales it is celebrated on January 15. In Sweden it is called as “allay heartens dag” which means (all hearts day). In Brazil it is celebrated on June 12.
Valentine’s Day is opposed in India by some of the Hindu fundamentalists. Valentine’s Day is opposed by the Shiva
Sean diehards as they feel that it is “cultural pollution from the west”. Valentine’s Day needs to be a part of the calendar where it gets some importance and makes some sense and helps in changing people’s views regarding this particular day as any other day.
