The term ‘dyslexia’ means ‘difficulty with words’ and many children and adults seem to possess this problem around the globe. If we clearly understand what sort of difficulty the dyslexic people face, it will be much easier to help them overcome it.
Symptoms of dyslexia:
• The dyslexic people will have confusion in understanding the directions like left or right and due to this problem they will reverse the letters, words or numbers while writing them down. For instance they may write ‘b’ for‘d’ and vice versa. They may have a confusion of which is 15 and which is 51. They may write few letters in their mirror image form. If this condition persists, it may affect them while learning games, reading the compass and so on.
• They may be very good when it comes to reading a big word but they will commit very silly mistakes when they read simple words such as for, the, a, with, when, from etc. Either they misread these words, omit them while reading or read them twice etc. At times they may add some simple words of their own which are not present in the text.
• While reading or writing a paragraph they pronounce or misspell the words in a wrong manner. Those misspelled and mispronounced words may not have any connection with the actual words.
• The dyslexic children will be lagging behind in the speech development and their understanding capacity of the oral language will be very poor.
• They not only commit mistakes while writing but their handwriting quality will also be very poor and illegible. The consistency in the writing pattern can not be seen in their written work. They may mix up the upper case and lower case letters; they may not be able to write the letters of the alphabet completely and in sequence.
• These dyslexic children will find mathematics also very tough apart from English. They will not be able to grasp the actual meanings of ‘add’, ‘subtract’ etc. They may get confused regarding the symbols of mathematics. Their mental arithmetic level will be very poor. They will find it difficult to read the time in a clock.
But the parents of the dyslexic children need not worry. There are lots of organizations and communities to help such children and even the parents are encouraged to participate in these programs to overcome the problems of dyslexia.
