There is a very confusing question which arises very frequently – “ Is there any difference between the advertising and the marketing?” This has been asked by many people so far. The answer is Yes definitely there is a difference between the advertising and the marketing, we should not have confusion on that.
Marketing is a Mother word and advertising is under the marketing. There are so many things which fall under marketing such as Sales promotion,Advertising,Consumer Behaviour, Sales and distribution etc. So it is important to know the difference between the marketing and the advertising.
First of all we have to know what is marketing. In a simple word it can be defined as an activity through which a marketer understands the needs and prospects of the customers and the potential customers and tries to fulfill all those needs by delivering the best through the product or the service is known as marketing.So in marketing customer is the key focus.Without customers the marketer can not plan that how to market the product as customers are the one who will buy the product or the service .Today there is a concept which is known as “one to one marketing”.In this concept the marketer thinks about each and every customer individually as all the customers are different and their needs and wishes vary from each other.So as a marketer first thing is to understand their unspoken needs. There are so many things which are not visible or are difficult to know from the customers.A marketer should try to understand those unspoken needs by his/her “customer insight”. Customer insight is not a simple thing but it depends on the experience of the marketer how he/she handles the customer.
On the other hand Advertising is something different from the Marketing.It is a paid media which helps a marketer to market his/her product/service in the market.You can say this is a non-personal way of communicating the message of the product or the service to the buyers and the potential buyers.It generally helps in promotion of the product or the service provided by the company.
There are so many medias which are used in Advertising. Such as the Print media, Electronic media etc. The print media includes giving advertisements in newspapers, magazines etc. The electronic media includes giving advertisements in the television ,radio etc.
But the advertising also depends on the customers.The advertisement generally brings a message to the customers so it should be very specific so that customers could understand the meaning of the message.When an advertisement is made then the advertiser focuses on the customers mainly because he/she then thinks the way to deliver the underlying message of the advertisement to the customers and the potential customers.
Advertisement also depends on the product or the service the marketer is offering.A marketer makes his/her promise through the advertisement and if the product or the service can not deliver the same to the customers then definitely it will create a negative impression of the product or the service in the mind of the customers.
Overall we can say that Advertisement is just a part of the Marketing.But both of them always work together.Even all the other components of the marketing also work together for a substantial growth of the organization.It is like a umbrella concept.Marketing is the umbrella here and all the other components of the marketing work under the same roof. It means marketing is a broader concept and which needs more things and concepts than the advertisement for the exchange of the products or the services between the company and the customers.But this is true that to achieve the bigger goal the marketing and the advertisement must work simultaneously with each other.
