Helmets – Are they compulsory to use?
Even if riding an ATV or Quad Bike is dangerous, in April 2009 there was still no law given in England for wearing protection when driving such vehicles.
When driving ATV or Quad Bike, wearing a helmet is strongly suggested in order to be more protected if an accident happens.
These kinds of vehicles are pretty fast going and if their speed reaches more than 25mph, a helmet is indispensable.
The helmet that will be good for you
When choosing a helmet to be protected when driving a Quad Bike/an ATV, make sure that it has the BSi Safety Kite Mark which indicates that the helmet was tested to be used on the roads. (When choosing a helmet for your bicycle you can guide yourself after the same criteria)
Types of helmets
Each kind of helmet has a different protection role: the open helmet is for your head protection when falling off the vehicle when an accident happens, but it does not protect you if something flies into your face or eye. A bug or fly can cause you pretty serious wounds, even if the speed of the vehicle is not higher than 25-30mph.
The benefits of the full helmet is that it offers you serious head protection, it can protect you from stones that “fly” in the air when cars go by and which might wound your head badly. You only have to be attentive that flies don’t reach your eyes and avoid riding speedy when a lot of dust is on the road because that affects your eyes too.
You might get tricked by nice designed helmets which fit to the current fashion, but be attentive, because such helmets don’t protect you getting hurt.
When it comes to using Quad bikes or ATV during the work program, there are laws given regarding health and safety at work which assure safety standards all time and make wearing a helmet compulsory. Weather you work for a company which repairs roads and you use such a recreational vehicle for traffic calming or you are a modern newspaper boy who delivers them when riding a recreational vehicle, you must wear a helmet.
