Stress management: Easy-do it yourself version
Many people can tell us what stress is and how to diagnose it. But not many people can tell us how to fight it? There are only few things you have to do and you can forget about stress forever.

The 4 important A’s:
• Avoid the stressor
• Alter the stressor
• Adapt to the stressor
• Accept the stressor

I will explain every point in depth, but don’t think that you have to do each and every thing every time. Every stress can be worked out by one-two appropriate points from the list below.

1: AVOID UN-NECESSARY STRESS

• Learn to say “no” to things beyond your scope and limit. Stick to your limits.
• Avoid people who stress you. Try to interact very less if necessary
• Control your environment. If traffic gives you stress take the longer but relaxed route, or get up a few minutes late from office.
• Avoid stressor topics. Simply cross off the discussion topics you get easily stressed with.
• Cut down to-do list. Know what is “must do” and “should do” from your schedule, responsibilities and tasks. Set priorities.

2: ALTER THE SRESSFUL SITUATION

• Speak up and express what you feel and think. Don’t save them for some other time.
• Be more confident. Deal with problems with an assertive head-on approach.
• Learn to manage your time and take time out for family.
• Feel at ease to compromise. When we expect someone to compromise why don’t we take the first step and be comfortable earlier.

3: ADAPT TO THE STRESSOR

• Reframe the issues and try to look from a more positive view point. In traffic jam don’t just sit and get angry and stressed out feeling more tired and thinking of all the things you have to do at home. Instead, see it as an opportunity to listen to your favorite music and enjoy your time alone.
• See the bigger picture. Think over your situation and ask yourself how important will it be in the long run?
• Avoid perfectionism for yourself and others. It is major stressor for many people.
• Take time out for positive aspect of life e.g. things you appreciate in life, your qualities and gifts.

4: ACCEPT THE STRESSOR

• Don’t try to control the uncontrollable facts. Death of a beloved, serious illness, national recession or someone’s behavior is beyond your control. Accept it.
• Look for the better side. There is a saying, “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger”. So there is bright sunshine after every dark night.
• Share with others. A good friend, colleague or a therapist may give you the best advice and help how to get out of your stress.
• Forgive others. It releases lots of anger and undue tension.

HEALTHY LIFE STYLE AND WAYS TO RELAX IN GENERAL

1. Exercise regularly and sweat out tensions.
2. Go for a walk and spend time in nature.
3. Eat healthy and reduce caffeine and sugar.
4. Call good friends often.
5. Get a massage or take a long bath.
6. Avoid alcohol, cigarettes and drugs.
7. Listen to good music and watch good comedy.
8. Curl up with a good book.

10. Smile to life and life will smile back to you.
