Studying the past helps us to understand just how much we have progressed and how far we have come. From living in caves and using plant life to cover one’s body, we have come to debating topics such as those of inter-galactic travel, nuclear energy and curing many chronic diseases. We live in homes which are powered by regular electric supply, running water, central air conditioning systems etc. Our vehicles are equipped with anti-theft alarms and voice-control mechanisms. The computers we use open windows into worlds which we can now visit without moving an inch. Soon we will see a time when robots will take over all daily household chores and tasks while humans watch and relax. In all the aforementioned ways and many more, science: both the field of study and that of developments, has made a tremendous impact on our lives.
The study of various possibilities and occurrences, combined with knowledge gained from practical experiments has made it possible for mankind to advance by leaps and bounds into a world where practically every phenomenon and event is seemingly controlled by man himself.
Studying these occurrences and the changes that science has made to daily life is a fascinating process. We see how the progresses made in the field of Science have worked towards bettering life for mankind in almost every sphere and manner. Whether it is in the form of curing diseases or increasing levels of safety and security, the world has benefited greatly with the advancements.
Let us explore the concept and field of science before discussing the many changes that it has brought about. The term ‘science’ is derived from the word scientia which is of Latin origins. The word can be translated to mean “knowing” or “knowledge”. Thus, we can understand the term ‘science’ to mean ‘the act of gaining knowledge’. In a nutshell, the concept of science can be seen to be a means of studying, exploring, understanding and appreciating the ways in which all phenomenons, beings, organisms and things present in our surrounding work.
Every scientific process, though varied in the details, is similar in some fundamental elements. The process begins with the act of observing the subject matter. This is done in order to collect information regarding the same. This information is treated as evidence for it can be used to study the phenomena in detail. The next step involves studying the collected information from a variety of angles, methods and points of view. The observations made in this stage are then recorded and form the basis of a number of theoretical hypotheses which arise as a result of the observations. These hypotheses are later tested in physically controlled environments and then in their natural environments to see the practical extent to which the collected material can be put to use. Depending upon the success or failure of these experiments, a formal theory is established which leads to a formula or rule or standard which is accepted to be the scientific and rational explanation behind how things work. Finally, the use of these established theories lies in their application in daily life for the purpose of estimating or predicting how or why a certain thing will occur. For example, we are able to predict the weather by observing some specific climatic conditions.
Understanding everything that lies within the spectrum of science is an impossible task for even years and years of research and study cannot be enough to unearth the secrets of this universe. However, significant advancements have been made that have not only helped us to understand a number of seemingly mystifying phenomenon, but have also helped to improve conditions of living.
If we are to discuss the topic of science and daily life, in the context of how scientific advancement has helped to improve the lifestyle of everyone irrespective of social or financial differences, a basic commodity that we all use comes to mind. Yes, we are talking about electricity. A result of many theories, experiments, failures and successes, the resource called electricity that we all employ almost thoughtlessly in our daily lives is a scientific achievement that has transformed lives the world over.
