Place of Jesus in Christianity
|
Christianity is one of the major religions of the world and claims to have more than 2 billion followers all over the world. The name of religion itself comes from the name of its prophet Jesus Christ. Although Christians attribute divinity to Christ himself, the Bible contains the contrary message. Nowhere in the Bible does Jesus say, “I am God” or “worship me”. Instead he says:
“My father is greater than I” (John 14:28)
“My father is greater than all” (John 10:29)
“…I cast out devils by the spirit of God…” (Matthew 12:28)
Jesus told that he was sent by God with a mission. His mission was to fulfill the law as he has told in Matthew 5 verses 17-20 in these words,
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen; will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Jesus tells about the nature of his mission as:
“…and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which has sent me” (John 14:24)
“Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17:3)
Jesus of Nazareth was a man approved by God:
“Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know” (Acts 2:22)
Bible itself doesn’t support the trinity concept as Jesus himself tells that the first and the most important Commandment is this,
“Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” (Mark 12:29)
