LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) was originally designed for display in electronic devices such as calculators, but now this technology revolutionized the television industry as it is now used to manufacture high-resolution televisions. LCD basically works on TFT (Thin Film Transistor Technology).
A screen is placed in between two transparent layer, just as in lamination. A bulb behind screens illuminates TFT panel. Liquid Crystals arrange themselves in different degrees , according to the data received. This block the unwanted light and only the necessary light could get passed.
LCD TVs had to compete Plasma TVs, since they were first introduced. The competition exists even today as both of them have their own merits and demerits. Color and Contrast of a Plasma TV is far better than that of LCD. However, if it comes to overall picture and quality, LCD TVs are slightly better than Plasma ones. LCD TVs have better resolution per square inch than a Plasma TV.
In its starting days, LCD TVs had very poor viewing angles as one could not watch from extreme horizontal angles. However, now this problem is successfully rectified as one can view them from angles as wide as 160 degrees and that too with absolute clarity.
Indeed, LCD technology was designed to manufacture laptop monitors and now nearly all the laptop monitors are LCD. Even in desktop computers LCD outperformed CRT technology and new users now prefer LCD monitors over any other. The property which popularized this technology is flatness of the screen. Wide screen LCD monitors are not more than thickness of an inch or two, let alone the normal ones. This help user to fix their TVs on walls with minimum space used, which made them extremely useful in public places like bars, hospitals or wherever they could be kept.
Now, LCD TVs are the most expensive ones but it will not take much time to take over the market as nearly all the companies are spending big fortunes on the research and development to enhance the quality and to diminish the costs. Considering all these factors it could be easily said if everything goes right, LCD is going to be a big thing in TV market and I can bet that.
