It is not uncommon for those people who are overweight to suffer from depression. However, there is also a link between depression and fad diets that pop up every now and then. It is not hard to understand why that is, since it is natural for people emotionally under stress to become depressed if they don’t lose the weight that was promised by the diet in the amount of time expected. There are also other factors that play a role and it is important to understand them all so that you can effectively handle this problem.
Fad diets always promise rapid weight loss without requiring you to do anything for it. This is not realistic, however, since it instills so much hope in overweight people that are already not satisfied with their lives that if it fails to do so it often leads to depression. That is not the only way how fad diets relate to depression, though. Most of these fad diets force people to cut many foods out of their daily meals and cause a quick weight loss since you are not eating much. This goes good for the first few days or weeks, but then the food cravings due to nutritional deficiencies will overpower the will power and binge eating or overeating set it. This results in any weight lost coming back and then with interest! This too can be related to depression since the weight loss is not permanent and a cycle begins that keeps people feeling bad for a long time to come. Depression is linked to the lack of success that people have with fad diets and the mood swings of extreme hope and crashing down again.
Another way that fad diets can be related to depression is through deficiencies. Diets that aim at quick weight loss often mean that vitamins and minerals will be missing from your body and that is a contributing factor to depression. If you don’t lose weight by sticking to a balanced diet, then you should face the fact that depression is a real possibility and that will only hinder any weight loss plans. Studies have also shown that a lack of fat intake can also add to any depressive feelings and make things worse. Fad diets of course strictly avoid fat intake and many of the diet pills burn all kinds of fats, including the good ones that keep you happy and healthy.
