Hinduism is a very old religion whose dating is not precise but somehow is related with Aryans incoming in Central Asia in 1500 BC. Therefore there is no founder of Hinduism as it is third biggest religion of the world. The word ‘Hindu’ comes from ‘Sindhu’ which is Sanskrit for river Indus.
Hindus have no such book like other religious books but their revealed writings are called ‘Shruti’ they have four main books according to their religious personalities called ‘Rishis’. They are Vedas, the Brahmanas, the Aranyakas and the Upanishads which are composed between a periods ranging from 1500 to 500 BC. The largest poem in the world is Mahabharata, and its main portion is ‘Bhagavad Geta’ which is very much practiced by Hindus.
As Hindus believes in polytheism (believes in having more than one god). Their important gods are Indra, god of rain, soma, god of intoxicating drink, Varuna, god of sky and Agni, god of fire. They have four main castes the Brahmins (the priest class with ultimate responsibility in religious matter), Kashatriyas (the worrier class), Vaisyas (businessman) and Shudras (workers to serve the upper three classes) and last one is Pariahs (the untouchable).
Hindu worships mainly in home, a river bank or at a holy place. In temple, there may be a priest whose duty is to waken the gods, washed them, dress them beautifully and give food to them. They also perform pray at river banks at their five rivers to wash their bodies form the evil that they have performed in their life.
Main festivals are Holi and Diwali. Holi is celebrating in spring season and Diwali is a five day festival celebrated in September. Diwali means ‘the festival of lights’. Hindu prefers family life. Marriage is generally arranged but mutual agreement is also present in their society.
