Unemployment has spread its roots to children also. A few days ago I wrote an article on the effects of recession and how it can affect relationships. Ever since, I have started thinking that it has its effects on children too.

Impact of Unemployment on Children

    On watching the response of children over unemployment, I have realized that except infants, unemployment has its own impact on children which varies according to age.

Child Security and Unemployment

    Kids of all ages need security. It is a normally practice for a child to bid adieu when his parents go out to work every day. But when this event stops suddenly the child would think that his parents are going to stay with him and play. However, this will not happen. As the parents are jobless they would not have time to play with the child and they would be busy searching for an alternate job with gloomy faces. The child will not understand the situation and in turn he will get disturbed and his security feeling fades away.

Effect of Unemployment on Teenagers

    Even teenage children may have the insecurity feeling when their parents are jobless. You may think that teen age children would have a sympathetic view of the situation. Instead, you would be astonished to sight their cruel behavior. It is a chain reaction and your children’s friends would also be cruel and it is more likely that they will use it as an excuse to tease and taunt.

Negative Influence of Unemployment

    Needs of man have increased; so also that of kids. Every kid wants to have everything what other kids have. Kids cannot be denied any material thing for the mere reason of financial crunch. This denial will kindle their anger which you cannot withstand.

Tactfully Facing Unemployment

    If you are jobless don’t panic. Be normal. You may help the households but to the extent of your capability without creating any confusion and chaos. Please ensure that, the children are taken care in the usual way. Let them feel that you are there for them. You may allot some time for job search which will not interfere the fun you share with children. You can always explain the situation to children in the language better understood by them. Communication is a must at this stage. You can also share your thoughts with others in this regard.
