The discovery of the first Light emitting diodes was a complete accident. The first of its kind was Semiconductor silicon carbide (SiC) which was believed to be able to emit light, if supplied with electricity, at the beginning of the 20th century. Since the light intensity was dull, the progression of the project was stopped.
After 20 years, German and Russian scientists progressed with this research but they weren’t successful. The light was still dull and the research was unpopular. With the coining of Electroluminescence in 1936, researchers delved into led neon kits. During the fifties, the English researchers developed the infrared LED. This led to the discovery of the first visible spectrum LED, the Gallium phosphide (GaP) which was red in color.
This marked the beginning of the LED technology. Researchers from all over the world started using different substrates to create any light-emitting diode tints. Following red, orange and pale green was invented, following which, yellow and saturated green tints appeared. During the 1990s, the addition of Gallium nitride paved way to the invention of blue LEDs. Another marked period was when scientists were able to make white light with fluorescent phosphors.
The applications of LEDs were numerous and kept on augmenting. As they are small they could be applied only in monitor illumination and some indicators. As they were expensive, they were used only in research centers in some research gadgets. Then came a range of Led products like calculators, cameras, lights. Color tints created with LEDs made them useable in the manufacture of monitors. James P. Mitchell created LED flat panel television in 1977. Then blue LEDs were invented which was cheap and helpful. The flat panel LED TV set which had the ability to model all possible color tints appeared in the late 1990s.
As scientists managed to turn lights brighter, LEDs were used in torches, traffic lights, street lights, interior lights and other stuff. This technique was inexpensive and handy. Even though this technology took a lot of time to develop, it made our lives more comfortable and convenient. The success of this great idea can be observed in all spheres of life.
