Working in electrical and electronic labs need much more care, because with a very short mistake one can lose its life. Foe this purpose, different instruments are used for security reasons as well as lose of material in labs. Digital multimeter is an electronic device used for different functions in circuits and other electrical and electronic works. It is generally called as DMM. For performing experiment in labs digital multimeter is the key instrument.
It has different functionally varies from one multimeter to another. Basically, every digital multimeter has four basic functions. It is used to find resistance of a resistor, voltage across a resistor, current flowing through a resistor, diode functions and finding pins of transistors.
For finding resistance across a resistor, positive end of DMM is connected with one side of resistor and negative end to other side. Select the knob across the resistance that you can see the resistance on the screen. It may be ohm, kilo ohm or mega ohm. You can customize the settings to mega or kilo ohm.
Another main function is finding of voltage. For this purpose, put the resistor or diode or transistor on the trainer (instrument where all the above devices can be patched and voltage should be provided) and give a supply of 5-20 volts, then turn the DMM’s knob to voltage line and you can see voltage on screen. By putting opposite terminals DMM can be damaged. If you are working with transformer and willing to find voltage then you should be very very much careful. Because by putting opposite terminal, you should undergo a great shock and if you are working in your university lab, you will be fined for this as in Pakistan.
Current finding can also be done in same way as voltage and resistor. DMM also have a fuse which prevent one from disorder of DMM’s function and has also a voltage protection area through which large destructions can be saved.
