Boost Your IQ
Intelligence Quotient is a measure of “smartness” but the tests may not be right at guessing it always. There are many subtitles which are usually tested to measure the IQ. Two broad categories usually tested are the verbal IQ and the performance IQ. Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) tests 4 of the 14 normal subtests i.e. Vocabulary, Similarities, Block Design, and Matrix Reasoning. Left-handed persons are better in verbal part and right-handed ones are better in performance part of IQ tests.

Here I will tell some easy ways to enhance your IQ and keep it up always. Believe me it will show in your IQ tests as well if you can fully implement these.

IMMEDIATE BRAIN-POWER BOOSTING

Healthy breathing
Most of us are in habit of shallow breathing, especially when we are stressed. This is exact negative of what is needed, deep breathing by nose to increase blood oxygen levels and improve brain functioning. Take out a few minutes for meditation and focus on relaxing deep breathing and discard all other thoughts. Soon you will experience a refreshing effect and faster easier thought process.

Move your body
Sit up and in better posture to ensure good blood supply to brain. Do a little exercise to make the blood run faster. Simple aerobics or even walking is very good.

What you eat and drink is also important
• Ginkgo biloba leaves increase blood flow to brain and increase concentration and memory. They can be taken as capsules, tea or directly off the tree. Long term use is also beneficial.
• Caffeine in form of coffee, tea, energy drinks or capsules; improve everything from test scores to college exams to chess games. It is temporary in effect and has long-term side effects if used frequently or in large amounts.
• Avoid heavy sugar loads before any mental work. High glycemic index foods will dump lots of sugar in your blood and make you slow and sleepy.
• Avoid alcohol and drugs. They give a fake temporary feeling of high and in reality destroy the higher brain functions.

Classic music
It has beneficial effects in next 10-15minutes. The Mozart effect is still debatable but there is evidence in favor of short term benefits of relaxing music.

EFFECTIVE LONGTERM BRAIN POWER BOOSTING

For expressive vocabulary enhancement
• Give yourself the best education possible
• Increase your general vocabulary
• Explain words aloud to yourself
The vocabulary subtests measure how much you have learnt, how well you have understood what you learnt, and how accurately you can express it. It is based on prior knowledge and experience. You can easily improve this part by knowing more words from dictionaries or even good books. Next step is to express and explain them as you will to someone who doesn’t know much about it.

Extract ideas from things
What ever you see you grasp an idea or a concept from it. The similarities subtest checks your ‘abstract verbal reasoning’ which is your ability to make and express concepts. The tests in this category usually need you to recognize the pattern in the question and then pick the odd one out, or pick the most appropriate next item from the 3-4 options given in answer.

Organize your perceptions into concepts
This is tested in block design subtests. Spatial perception, visual abstract processing and problem-solving is tested by these tests. Reflect and correlate more and more from what you see and learn from things around you.

Look for equilibrium
Abstract non-verbal analysis and reasoning are tested in Matrix Reasoning subtests. When you take a walk try to see the symmetry of things. The angles, the reflections, the view and see how they appear to you. Think over it. It will not resemble the patterns in an IQ test at an initial step but soon you will find out where to focus and what to understand from it.

Books for your brain
Not all the books are increasing your IQ, but a few categories of books will definitely give you long term benefit as they will open up new creative thought processes.
SCIENCE: Science is not restricted to science text books only. It builds curiosity; improve the method of learning and understanding; teach how to validate our intuition with reason and they inspire wonder.
PHILOSOPHY: Like science, it is also outcome of analytical thinking. Philosophy teaches us about ourselves. It includes both classical philosophy and religious books.
SERIOUS FICTION: It improves imaginative power and let the reader experience a new reality. Serious fiction contains great language, psychology, history and philosophy and elevates level of consciousness.
HISTORY: I don’t refer to the dull boring history text books at school. The general books on history have fascinating anecdotes, remarkable characters, and the evolution of ideas that have shaped civilization. It lets us interpret our own time, self awareness and nature of humanity.
POETRY: Poetry is more than just a set of romantic love poems. Great poetry arouses feeling of awe and reverence for the power of words. Poetry is medium of humanities most ancient masterpieces. It is fusion of word and meaning.

Sleep well
Not only the quantity but also the quality of sleep is important. Too less, too much, or irregular sleeping habit have a negative impact on intelligence and brain power.
