In this modern era, the 21
st century, it is barely impossible for someone not to have heard about what Internet is. Since you're reading this, you are surely using Internet, or received this article from a friend who is using Internet and eventually copied the article for you to read it.
As about Internet, whether it benefits us or pulls us down, I will explain below.
Now, how does it work? Internet is a huge computer network with millions of computers connected trough different networks and ISPs (Internet Service Provider). Of course, this network is mostly secured, since it contains valuable information of people using these services. Internet Service Providers have the role of providing the ability for users to connect to the Internet, and be able to download and upload as they need to.
What are downloads and uploads? Simply explained, download is getting data, and upload is sending data. Without these, a connection is good for nothing. You're probably asking “why to send data, when I only want to get data?”. The answer is quite simple. In order to get data, you need to send the request to get that data. Sending a request is sending data in fact.
First of all, Internet can connect us to relatives who are settled in other countries, all over the world. Maybe you have your daughter 2000 miles away, and you want to talk to her every day, for 5 minutes at least. If you're not rich, you cannot afford to call, it could easily blow your budget in days or seconds. Instead, you can use free voice services, which provide the same functionality as a telephone or cell phone, and these require an internet connection and no additional fee! Amazing, isn't it? Or maybe you don't want to talk, then you can use IM (Instant Messaging) services. Fortunately, these services are outnumbered, and you will easily find one if you search for it.
Secondly, Internet is full of information, valuable information. Want to keep in touch with the daily news or other types of things like studying some history or maths? On the Internet, you'll surely find resources for anything you can imagine! Millions of people out there built their own communities, and try to help each other in every possible way. You can join any community, or search for your answers on blogs, article sites, Q&A sites or other websites which provide the appropriate answers.
If you are a researcher, or only doing a homework which involves researching a theme or some scientist's life, you will find everything on the Internet. You will find full biographies and descriptions, available books to buy (related to your topic) and lots of images and eventually videos too.
No matter how we look at it and no matter what we think about it, Internet really benefits everyone, but still, pay attention, and don't get addicted to Internet, you should always know your limits, and shouldn't push them. Happy surfing!
