There are a lot definitions that one may find in numerous textbook or articles over the past few years. Most of these simply say that A.I. is “the study and design of intelligent agents”. Barr and Feigenbaum, computer scientists, defined Artificial Intelligence as a part of computer science concerned with designing systems that demonstrate characteristics of human intelligence. A.I., generally, has two ideas: first, it relates to the study of the processes of human intelligence, and second, it is concerned with the representation of these processes so that machines can exhibit an intelligent behavior.
Actually, there has been no real and clear definition for artificial intelligence, due to the ambiguity of the term ‘intelligence’, itself. However, this term was coined by computer scientist John McCarthy to pertain to two representative definitions. One revolves around the comparison of intelligence of computing machines with humans. The other is concerned with the performance of machines which "historically have been judged to lie within the domain of intelligence". Still, these definitions are not clear, perhaps, because of the usage of ‘intelligence’ in both.
Virginia Montecino’s research gives a simple explanation of A.I., which is “an attempt to model aspects of human thinking on computers”. Thus, artificial intelligence is concerned with designing computer systems that exhibits the characteristics of ‘a thing that thinks’ which can learn, doubt, understand, affirm, negate, imagine, and feel.
Moreover, the presence of an 'intelligent behavior' is shown by the following characteristics and abilities to:
• Understand and learn from past experiences
• Deduce ideas from uncertain and contrasting messages
• Make fast and efficient responses to new situations
• Use knowledge in solving problems
• Face complex situations
• Make inferences in simple but logical manner
• Distinguish the relative importance of the different elements of a situation.
Technological innovations and applications on Artificial Intelligence have also been further classified:
• Natural Language Processing – concerned with understanding, generating, recognizing, translating, etc natural languages, which refers to languages spoken by people like Filipino and English, using computers
• Speech Recognition and Synthesis – concerned with developing machines which can respond to, interpret, and generate spoken words
• Robotics – concerned with stimulation of human motor abilities in machines
• Computer Vision – concerned with acquisition and processing of visual information using computer
• Fuzzy Logic – concerned with the study regarding how humans make decisions
• Neural Networks – concerned with simulation of biological processes of the human brain and nervous system
• Expert Systems – concerned with how systems can solve problems the way human experts do
Throughout history, A.I. research has been mainly involved in two quite different enterprises: attempting to use computer to reproduce intelligent behavior (weak A.I.), and finding out whether the mind is a computer itself (strong A.I.).
